Your Journey Overview
This fifteen-day journey is built to work for three generations travelling together — city, bush, winelands, whale coast and Cape Town, each paced to give grandparents, parents and children room to enjoy it differently. Here's how the five stops fit together.
Johannesburg — Your Gateway to South Africa
2 Nights · Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa (Bed & Breakfast)
The journey begins in Johannesburg — the City of Gold, built on more than a century of mining ambition and still humming with that same energy. Glass towers rise over informal markets, and the Nelson Mandela Bridge threads through the skyline as you drive in from the airport. Two nights at Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa ease the family in gently — a quiet, garden-set base close enough to town for a visit to the Market Theatre Complex, and calm enough to properly rest before heading into the bush.
Welgevonden Private Game Reserve — Big Five Immersion
3 Nights · Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa (Fully Inclusive)
From Johannesburg, the road turns north into Limpopo's Waterberg region and Welgevonden Private Game Reserve — 36,000 hectares of mountain and valley, and malaria-free, which matters when you're travelling with children. This is Big Five country, but the real signature here is what else turns up on a drive: pangolin, brown hyena, aardvark, and a resident white rhino population among the largest held privately anywhere in Africa. Three fully inclusive nights at Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa, with guest numbers kept deliberately low, mean each game drive feels arranged around your family rather than shared with a busload of others.
Stellenbosch — The Cape Winelands
2 Nights · Spier Hotel & Wine Farm (Bed & Breakfast)
From the bush, the pace shifts to the Cape Winelands and Stellenbosch — South Africa's second-oldest town, laid out under oaks old enough to carry national monument status, its historic core still lined with the original gabled, thatched buildings. Two nights at Spier Hotel & Wine Farm put the family at the heart of one of the world's great wine routes — and a family cycle out through the vineyards, with a tasting for the grown-ups built into the stop, turns an ordinary cellar visit into something everyone can do together.
De Kelders — The Whale Coast
3 Nights · Grootbos Private Villas (Full Board Plus)
The route then turns to the coast and De Kelders, a small town tucked into the coves of Walker Bay, about two hours from Cape Town. From July through November, this stretch of water is one of the best places anywhere to watch Southern Right Whales breed and calve close to shore — worth timing your dates around if whale season matters to you, since sightings are seasonal rather than guaranteed. Three nights at Grootbos Private Villas, on a full-board-plus basis, give the family a proper coastal pause between the bush and the city.
Cape Town — The Mother City
4 Nights · Labotessa Luxury (Bed & Breakfast)
The journey closes in Cape Town, where mountain meets sea and Table Mountain sits over the city like it's still keeping watch. Centuries of layered history sit close together here — a 17th-century castle a short walk from glass-fronted towers, vineyards inside the city limits, and neighbourhoods that shift character block by block between art, food and music. Four nights at Labotessa Luxury anchor the family here, including a complimentary final night as our thank-you on this combined itinerary.
How you spend those four days is up to you: a shark cage dive or Marine Big Five trip for the thrill-seekers, a scenic helicopter run to Saldanha for West Coast seafood, or a vintage motorbike-and-sidecar run out of Hermanus. Cape Town's weather can turn quickly regardless of season, so it's worth keeping a little flexibility in these final days.
