A Big Five Safari That Feels Like Home

Nestled within the vast Ven-Africa Private Game Reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, Makongo Hills offers something increasingly rare in the safari industry: a genuinely relaxed and authentic bush experience.

Located approximately five hours from Durban, the lodge overlooks the historic Maqongqo Hills and enjoys sweeping views across an unfenced valley rich in wildlife and Zulu heritage. While many lodges focus heavily on luxury and opulence, Makongo Hills takes a different approach. The atmosphere is warm, familiar and welcoming, creating the feeling of staying at a private bush home rather than a commercial lodge.

The reserve spans approximately 15,000 hectares and is home to the Big Five, including cheetah and black rhino. The varied terrain ranges from dense bushveld and rocky hills to open grasslands, making for scenic and rewarding game drives. During my stay, sightings included cheetah, elephant, buffalo, nyala, kudu, bushbuck, zebra and an impressive variety of birdlife.

Accommodation is intimate, with just six rooms accommodating a maximum of twelve guests. I stayed in one of the traditional rondavels, which offered comfortable, well-appointed accommodation while retaining its authentic South African character. The lodge’s small size contributes significantly to its charm, creating a peaceful and personal safari experience.

One of the standout features is the communal atmosphere. Whether relaxing around the boma fire, enjoying meals overlooking the valley, or spending time on the pool deck while wildlife moves through the surrounding bush, the lodge encourages guests to slow down and appreciate the setting.

Makongo Hills is particularly well suited to families and groups of friends. The lodge’s layout and exclusive-use options make it an excellent choice for those wanting a private safari experience where game drives, meal times and activities can be tailored to their group.

From a value perspective, Makongo Hills positions itself as one of the more affordable Big Five safari experiences in South Africa, offering accommodation, meals and twice-daily game drives at a price point that remains accessible compared to many private reserves.

If you’re looking for ultra-modern luxury and designer finishes, there are other lodges that may suit you better. However, if your priority is authentic safari experiences, spectacular scenery, warm hospitality and excellent value within a Big Five reserve, Makongo Hills is a lodge well worth considering.

Rating: Highly recommended for families, groups and travellers seeking an authentic, relaxed safari experience in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
